Inside Sitsiam Camp

Sitsiam Camp, Muay Thai, ManchesterThe Sitsiam Camp
Ashton-underLyne/Stalybridge, Tameside,Greater Manchester. Kru Tony Moore has been flitting between England and Thailand for over 35 years and since his first meeting with the late Arjarn Samai Messamarn at the Buddhai Swan Institute of Si Ayuddhaya in Thailand,Kru Tony dreamed of there being a school in England just like the Buddhai Swan Institute. Authentically and traditionally Thai, such a school would give students the opportunity of training in the Thai Martial Arts just as in Thailand but without ever stepping onto an aeroplane!

Fighters and Fitness centre Clayton, ManchesterThe original Sitsiam Camp first opened in 1983 at the Fighters and Fitness Centre in Clayton, East Manchester. The school had its roots firmly set in the sport of Muay Thai. During this period Kru Tony was a famous active Muay Thai fighter winning his Champion of Champions title in 1988.
The school produced many champions and international Thai Boxers who in turn became famous has outstanding Thai Boxers around the world. In 1992 Kru Tony began studying Krabi Krabong at Buddhai Swan,Thailand under the auspices of Por Kru (Arjarn Samai Messamarn). Kru Tony studied hard and achieved a 9th Degree Gold Sash the highest graded student of Krabi Krabong outside of Thailand. In 2002 Kru Tony was appointed representative for the Buddhai Swan, Thailand, acting as a direct link to the Buddhai Swan,Si-Ayutthaya, Thailand.

Sitsiam Camp, Ashton, ManchesterIn 2003 the Sitsiam Camp and Buddhai Swan Institute opened a new school in Ashton-under-Lyne, Tameside, Greater Manchester. at the Portland Mill.
The Sitsiam Camp/Buddhai Swan, England became a true Thai Martial Arts Centre of excellence teaching Muay Thai (Thai Boxing), Muay Boran (traditional Thai Boxing) and Krabi Krabong (Thai weapons system).
The School stayed open at this venue from 1994 until September 2018.

About our School Sitsiam Camp
The Sitsiam Camp – Manchester’s only true Thai Martial Arts Centre of Excellence.

Sitsiam Camp, ManchesterOur new location at 360 Fitness, Unit 15/16, Whitelands Industrial Estate, Clarence St, Ashton-under-Lyne/Stalybridge Greater Manchester SK15 1QL is bigger than the previous Sitsiam Camp/Buddhai Swan. We now hold more classes the ever before.
Moving all the artefacts for our Shrine and Temple at the new camp took many days. These items were presented by Muay Thai teachers and friends in Thailand. The Shrine and Temple are a big part of what makes the Sitsiam Camp/Buddhai Swan so unique in the West.
The shrine reminds the students that knowledge comes from the past Teachers and we must show respect to them at the beginning and end of each class.

About our School Sitsiam Camp and Buddhai Swan:

Sitsiam Camp:

The school has two names The Sitsiam Camp and Buddhai Swan, the Sitsiam Camp is devoted to the sport of Muay Thai, accurately reflecting a Muay Thai camp in Thailand with ring, pads, bags and all the equipment necessary to practise the art of Muay Thai.

Buddhai Swan:
The Buddhai Swan, which is official recognised by Buddhai Swan, Thailand. This section of the school is dedicated to the traditional Thai Martial Arts Krabi Krabong and Muay Boran.

The Sitsiam Camp and Buddhai Swan school:

The school also has its own shop which carries identical stock to the shops outside the major stadiums in Bangkok, Lumpinee and Rajadamnern.

Since the opening of the Sitsiam Camp/Buddhai Swan in Ashton-under-Lyne, Tameside, Greater Manchester. on 1994 many instructors and Muay Thai camps worldwide have enquired about travelling to the school for seminars; in order to get a feel of what it’s like to train in Thailand
and broaden the curriculum at their own schools.
For these Instructors the main interest is in the more traditional side of Thailand’s Martial Arts such as Krabi Krabong and Muay Boran (Muay Kaacheurk). Although there are many Muay Thai camps in England and indeed throughout Europe the emphasis at these camps is purely on the more popular modern sport of Muay Thai.

The Sitsiam Camp/Buddhai Swan, England follows the same curriculum as the Buddhai Swan Institute in Thailand and appreciates that one man can’t know everything! Just like the Buddhai Swan in Thailand we invite specialists to our school to teach different aspects,
not only the Thai weapons and unarmed combat but also Thai history, etiquette and dancing relating to the martial arts.

Arjarn Panya Kraitus renowned author of the book “Muay Thai Most Distinguished Art of Fighting” – has been a regular visitor at the Sitsiam Camp since 1996. Arjarn Panya was present during early negotiations for the new school and has been a great asset as advisor in the layout and structure of the school.

Kru Tony has long been considered a member of the Messamarn family and has been able to invite members of his extended family from Thailand to teach at the Sitsiam Camp on a regular basis.
Regular visitors to the Sitsiam Camp have been the sons and daughter of Por Kru Samai Messamarn, Arjarn Werayut Messamarn headteacher at the Buddhai Swan, Arjarn Sila Messamarn teacher of the Royal Thai Army, Kru ‘O’ Messamarn and Kru Orr.

We asked Tony what he hoped to achieve with the new school ?

“Since first being introduced to Muay Thai, I fell in love not only with the sport of Muay Thai and the Thai Martial Arts but also Thailand, it’s culture and it’s people. Muay Thai changed my life and hopefully has made me into a better person”. I have been lucky to meet some great people who have devoted their lives to keeping the Thai Martial Arts alive
and for whom I have the highest respect and gratitude. Sadly many of these have now passed away. I opened my own school to hopefully give people the chances and opportunities that I’ve enjoyed.

Muay Thai is not just a fighting art, far from it. It is a philosophy, a way of life and has incalculable benefits. I’ve known many teachers from Thailand who have been in their sixties and seventies and still very active both mentally and physically through their involvement in Muay Thai.
Through the exercise, discipline and self control a person is not only learning to defend themselves but is investing in their future health and happiness. I truly believe that Thailand has given the world a great gift and through the new school here in Ashton-under-Lyne/Stalybridge, Tameside
we hope to give as many people as possible the chance to partake of what the Martial Arts of Thailand have to offer.”

“Let your journey begin.”
